Advice needed!
Would you all mind recommending books, techniques, etc. for potty training? If there's anything to boys specifically, I'd greatly appreciate that too. I didn't think we were going to deal with this until Jack was at least 2.5yrs. Since Thanksgiving, however, he's been telling us "poo" when he's gone in his diaper. Today, he kept saying it, but there was nothing. About 20 minutes later, he'd "pooed" in his pants. These are the signs, right? Please let me know what you think and have experienced, b/c I haven't prepared for this one bit.
Yep, I'm still reading your blog-page, I just haven't commented for a while :)
I think Eli is right around Jackson's age, if I remember correctly, and he also recently started similar things. Only he pulls on his diaper and says 'go'.
Whenever he says this, we rush him back to the potty and let him sit there until he says he's done, even if his diaper is already wet. Often times, he puts a little tinkle or something in :) If he does, we then give him a little treat, like a chocolate chip or something. Also, we've found it helpful to sit him on the potty about ten minutes after he's done eating meals. We often seem to 'accidentally' catch something this way, and it has helped to reinforce to him that that is where the, well, 'ewwy's' go.
If you're really brave, Gerber makes really good cloth training pants. They're cloth, like underwear, but they're thick, so they absorb stuff really well. You could try putting Jackson in those for a day or so and see what happens. Often times, the uncomfortable feeling of wearing wet underwear is enough to help a child get to the potty on time.
Also, don't be discouraged. With my oldest, one month I thought she would never be trained, and then, all of the sudden, she was completely trained. It's like it 'clicked'. There are good days and bad days---don't give up because of the bad days! On those bad days, simply say, "Jackson, next time, let's put this in the potty!"
We used these same techniques with our daughter, and she was trained fairly quickly.
Hope this all helps! (Sorry, it was probably more than you wanted to hear :)

I'm looking forward to hearing what you find out since you're my only other friend nearby with a boy to potty train! I hope to start with CJ in six months and will be picking your brain at that time to see what worked for you!

This is the best post I've seen on this topic: http://amazingtrips.blogspot.com/2008/01/amazing-trip-trick-poop-goes-in-potty.html. It covers books, tools, and then encourages moms like me who have one for whom none of it has worked yet. Sounds like Jackson's off to a good start....My only advice is to stay relaxed; I think I scared Ben with my desire to get it done. I started at 2; WAY too early for most boys to be serious about it.-rlr
